A Celtic Sampler: Tour Ireland & Scotland August 16 - 30, 2010 (begins in Shannon)
Day 1. Arrive in Shannon. Travel through the Burren in Co. Clare. Sights include Cliffs of Moher, Neolithic wedge tombs, the karstic topography and the microflora of the Burren. Our goal this day is Oughterard, Co. Galway. Day 2. We travel across Connemara visiting the Quiet Man Bridge, the Twelve Pins, Kylemore Abbey & Victorian Gardens, and the seaside village of Clifden. Day 3. Visit Inish Mhor, largest of the Aran Islands in Galway Bay. Highlights include stops at the Seven Churches and Dun Aeonghus, an ancient fortress perched on a cliff above the sea. Day 4. Drive across Mayo to Sligo under the shadow of Croagh Patrick, Ireland’s most sacred mountain. Potential site visits in Sligo include Parke’s Castle, Glencar Falls, the Hazelwood Forest, Lissadell House, and Drumcliff Churchyard – burial place of the poet W.B. Yeats. Day 5. Drive to the east with stops at Boyle Abbey, Kells, and Trim Castle. Stay at Ardee, Co. Louth. Day 6. Visit ancient and mediaeval monuments in the Boyne Valley including Newgrange, Monasterboice, Mellifont Abbey. Day 7. Day trip to Dublin for visits to Kilmainham Gaol, Guinness Hops Store, St. Patrick’s and Christchurch Cathedrals. Day 8. Fly to Edinburgh. Explore Old Town and the Royal Mile. Day 9. Visit Holyrood Palace and Rosslyn Chapel.
Day 10. Travel to Inverness visiting Perth and the Stone of Destiny in Scone Castle before traveling across the Highlands. Day 11. Visit Culloden and Loch Ness on the way to Ft. William. Day 12. Cross Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park on the way to Glasgow. Day 13. Day in Glasgow visiting the Hunterian Museum and Glasgow Cathedral. Day 14. Return to Edinburgh via Stirling and the Wallace Monument. Our goal is to offer our guests an unsurpassed experience of Ireland & Scotland.
